Teachers dinner

Yesterday we had a teachers dinner thing after school. I think it was to welcome the new teachers or something like that, as it is the new semester. It was really nice. Had a good time, and ate good food. Though i think i might have eaten a little too much, as I was still digesting my food at 6am the next morning. :-)

on another note: here in another good mail from a while back. Its a little long, but worth reading I think.

A housewife took a lover during the day, while her husband was at work. Unknown to her, her 9-year old son was hiding in the closet. Her husband came home unexpectedly, so she hid her lover in the closet. The boy now has company.
Boy: "Dark in here. "
Man: "Yes it is. "
Boy: "I have a baseball. "
Man: "That's nice. "
Boy: "Want to buy it? "
Man: "No, thanks. "
Boy: "My dad's outside. "
Man: "OK, how much? "
Boy: "$250. "
In the next few weeks, it happens again that the boy and the mom's lover are in the closet together.
Boy: "Dark in here. "
Man: "Yes, it is. "
Boy: "I have a baseball glove. "
Man: "How much? "
Boy: "$750. "
Man: "Fine. "
A few days later, the father says to the boy, "Grab your glove. Let's go outside and toss the baseball. "
The boy says, "I can't. I sold them.
The father asks, "How much did you sell them for? "
The son says, "$1000."
The father says, "That's terrible to overcharge your friends like that. That is way more than those two things cost. I'm going to take you to church and make you confess."
They go to church, and the father alerts the priest and makes the little boy sit in the confession booth and closes the door.
The boy says, "Dark in here. "
The priest says, "Don't start that shit

Part of an old email from a Teacher

The Images of Mother
4YEARS OF AGE Y My Mommy can do anything!
8 YEARS OF AGE Y My Mom knows a lot! A whole lot!
12 YEARS OF AGE Y My Mother doesn't really know quite everything.
14 YEARS OF AGE Y Naturally, Mother doesn't know that, either!
16 YEARS OF AGE Y Mother? She's hopelessly old-fashioned.
18 YEARS OF AGE Y That old woman? She's way out of date!
25 YEARS OF AGE Y Well, she might know a little bit about it.
35 YEARS OF AGE Y Before we decide, let's get Mom's opinion.
45 YEARS OF AGE Y Wonder what Mom would have thought about it?
65 YEARS OF AGE Y Wish I could talk it over with Mom. . ...

An English professor wrote the words: "WOMAN WITHOUT HER MAN IS NOTHING" on the blackboard, and directed the students to punctuate it correctly.

The men wrote:
"Woman, WITHOUT HER MAN, is nothing."

The women wrote:
"WOMAN!! WITHOUT HER, man is nothing!"

WORKOUTS.

Workouts have been going great. Really make my day go that much better and I feel more energized throughout the day. Though the tough part is always getting up at 5:20am to go to the gym. But Once im there its all good. And I find that going to the pool after school really helps to relax me and loosen up my body. And of course, now swimming is a whole different experience now that I can see. I dont even want to think about the fact that there was a time when I could not see. Thank goodness for lasek!

At Junha's

Saturday, as always, i went to Junhas for the kids class. I was super surprised because Honyong did super well. I made these notecards, all with different words on it in such a way that you can build sentences with them and I would tell him a sentences and then he put them together (meaning he can now read some basic things- or at least recognize the words). Also, I would just give him the note cards (all which would for a sentences) and not say anything, and he put them in the correct order! I was shocked, as he usually does not talk much but I think when he looks at the structure of the language it somehow makes sense to him. Though i must say, i was a bit confused because when we had it on the notecards he got them always right, but then when he got to speak he would say "I is girl" "you is boy" and I would say ... "I am a girl, You ARE A boy" but then he would repeat what he had just said. So I am not sure if he is just messing with me sometimes, or if he really does not understand. Though i think he is just trying to mess with me.

What DID surprise me also, was that I said "Honyong is pretty. Anais is not pretty" and he said
"no, anais IS pretty" Why was i shocked? because him.... always being a kid, since I have been coming over on saturdays he always says things like "anais could eat a couch, anais pig, anais teacher big (some in english, some in korean)" at any rate... most of the times he doesnt say very nice things. But I understand he is a kid and of course he doesnt really mean them. But anyways...the first step forward I guess, was when he called me Anais for the first time instead of calling me APRIKA (for Africa). And now.... him saying that i am not ugly. Guess thats good. :-)

Then after the lesson I got to chat with Junha and JJ. ... and JJ was like... "here, i want to show you this. " and he took out this long rolled paper with chinese calligraphy. (kinda for a wall decoration or something) quite big. And he told me it was his uncle's caligraphy and that he didnt know what it said, but that the meaning was written in korean on the back. So I asked if he was going to hang it on the wall or something. (note: it is super cool. very nice) and then we said "oh no.... this is for you" And I was like ... what!???!! They just should not be giving me things. I know they probably wanna show their appreciation for me coming on saturdays and teaching Honyoung and not charging them or what not.... but I do it because I want to and because I enjoy it. I love those kids. They are great. And so are Junha and JJ and so i do it with pleasure. If I really did not like them I would just not go and tell them...im sorry, but im busy, or .... i just cannot do it. Anyways.....I know they wanna say thx in a way, but I just feel like its too much. That they gave me that.

oh! and they also invited me next saturday to come to Junha's cousins' wedding so I can see a korean wedding. I was surprised that they invited me. but gladly accepted. Now I just was wondering what I should wear. Not sure how dressy people are in korea. Of course, when not sure always go the safe route, right???? better to be overdressed than underdressed. So tomorrow I will maybe ask Jacky if she has suggestions as to how i should dress. Looking forward to it.

Classes start

Last week I finally started classes. Though of course because it is the first week we really had no real class, but instead it was just an introductory class letting the kids know what the rules are, how the class will be run, etc etc etc. Overall i think it went pretty well. I think its going to be just like last semester in that i am going to have some classes that are really bad in which no one participates and people are just talking all the time and not listening to me. And i too, will have classes that are in the middle and others that are really good, and that have students that participate and that actually want to learn something.

And im kinda happy cuz Jacky gets to co-teach with me for i think 3 or 4 classes. That way i get to see her more hrs of the day. Yeah, i know, pathetic. But i just like being around her. She always has good energy. :-)

Extrano a mi babbo!!!

SECOND SALSA NIGHT OUT

Last week i could not really go out salsa dancing because I had been sick with the flu or something. So I just stayed home in bed all weekend. boring. At any rate.... this saturday I decided I would go dancing again. It was SO fun. I left my place at around 7pm estimating that it would take me about 2 or 3 hours to get there depending on traffic. I later found out... I am actually okay leaving maybe at 9pm from my house. Why??? well, it took me 2.5 hrs to get to Hongdae and so it was still kinda early to go to the salsa place. So I walked around and got familiarized a bit more with the area since last time I had been there i was so totally, completely and hopelessly lost. Because I HAD been so lost I decided it was about time I get familiarized with the area and get to know the places around there.

I actually made quite good discoveries. I found out that to get to the salsa place it is actually not that complicated. (i was afraid I would not be able to find it again) . Pretty much coming out of the subway I go straight, then make a right turn on the second street and walk straight for about 15minutes and i am there. Really simple! Also, i now know exactly where the kello kitty cafe is and the charly brown coffee place! So now if i every wanna go back there i can figure out how to get there. I seriously does not sound that complicated but when you get to Hongdae there are so many many many places and little streets and alley ways that it is super easy to get lost unless you have been there many time and are familiarized with the area.

So that was the good part. Also, As i walked around I got to listen to this cool korean band play and browsed through some stores yyada yyada yyada.... and then finally around 11pm I went to Havanna. People were JUST starting to come in. I think last time i got there at 11:30 and so there were a bit more people. But I did not mind at all, as I had already met some of them two weeks prior so at least i did not feel like a complete stranger.

the night went well. i dance and danced and danced with some new guys I had not danced last time and then there was this cuban couple that came in and the guy kept wanting to dance with me because he said I was the only one that could follow him, as Koreans here learn to dance new york style which is in a line as opposed to cuban style which is in a circle. At least he was a great lead, so i had a fantastic time dancing with him.

I also discovered, amazingly, that in this one club in particular I actually do not sweat as much as i did at la fogata back in columbus. I remember always being soaked in sweat and feeling super gross and having to go to the bathroom constantly to wipe off the sweat.... ( i know, super sexy right???) Anyways... but i like this place cuz i guess its well air conditioned, as i really do not sweat that much. So its great! saves me some trips to the bathroom to wipe off sweat!.

Also, i am proud to say that i am starting i think to get a little better at the whole leading thing. I learn 1 new move and though i still suck as the lead, the girls do more or less well following me. Though sometimes i really mess up the counts! being the guy is just so complicated. Plus, girls here start on a 1 count and i learned to start on a 2 count and so i get confused as to when I am supposed to signal turns and everything. I think it will just be a matter of getting a feeling for it. And of course, doing lots of observation and practice. It is kinda hard though, to learn the guy part just from watching because it is easy to become overhwhelmed by all the hand movements. And so the trick is to just focus and one move, practice it , and then once you have mastered it and are bored out of your mind from that move, then move on to the next.

At least here in korea nobody minds if girls dance with girls and guys with guys. If you were in the US a guy would never dance with another guy because they would think it is SO gay. But people here are not that immature about it and so guys CAN dance with guys (to help them out with moves, or show them how something is done) same for girls. So this is a great learning tool because you can practice pretty much with everyone. And I like this place where i go because everyone is really nice and always willing to help you out and show you something if you dont understand how to do a move or something.

so after a long night of salsa i went home and then today i slept until 2pm. yeah. crazy.
