This sunday was my first day of private classes. I will be teaching 2 classes on Sunday. One from 2-4pm the next from 4:15-6:15pm. One of the girls is 14 and the other two girl ( i teach them together) are 11. So this first sunday I told them I would do one hour cuz i wanted to evaluate their english so I can properly prepare a lesson for them. So pretty much it was talking and getting to know them a bit. I was super surprised with both sessions. The 14 year old girl, when I first came to her house seemed super shy and I thought.... oh no.... she is not going to talk at all. This might be a bit difficult. But then when we went into her room and started chatting I realized that she actually understands a lot and that she can speak pretty ok. Not perfect but not bad AT ALL. And what i thought was really cute was when she said "i have a secret. do you want to know my secret? only my sister knows it? but you cannot tell my mom." So of course I said "yes, i want to know your secret. what is it?" and so she took this stuff out of a drawer in her room. Very well hidden it was.... what was it???? contacts! yes, contact lenses. In korea they sell colored contact lenses for like 10 bucks or so and kids love to get them. Sometimes cuz they like to change their eye color and sometimes just to make their eyes look a bit bigger (when they get the same color as their eye color) but apparently parents do not like that too much because it scratches the eye or something- what this girl said is "my mom thinks it is not healthy" i guess because they are not custom made... so its not like they are made for the specific shape of your eye. Anyways.... so she showed me and then just said... but dont tell my mom! That is so cute. :-)
So that went well, she seems like a really sweet girl and I am sure we will have a great time stuyding together.
For the other girls that are 11. WOW. When I was told I was gonna be teaching an 11 years old I was not particularly excited about he idea because I immediately thought about my students at school and the level that they are at and i thought these girls would be at the same level. But luckily I was SO wrong. When I got there and started talking to them I immediately realized that their level was SO much higher! They both understood me pretty well, they had a pretty extensive vocabulary and they both had really good pronunciation. Almost american like pronunciation, which suprised me becuase a lot of asians struggle with that part of hte language. All in all, I was pleased with all the girls. Mostly because they already have a pretty strong base for english and so I can do a lot more with thema nd have more fun and leave out more boring stuff.
Got class in like 5 mintues but just gotta mention quickly. I will be doing further mention on korean homes. Now that I have seen a couple more of them my opinion has changed a bit from before- before being the fact that I thought that they were pretty simple, had the basics only etc etc etc....
